Quiet Quiet Annex Lights

In his 50 years of making outsider folk music, Michael Hurley has never played in Toronto. No surprise, Invocation Presents’ Jay Pollard is beyond excited that the Pennsylvania native accepted his invitation to be part of his Tranzac takeover in April.

He first saw Hurley perform for about 50 people a decade ago in a tiny saloon in California. That show also included Hurley devotees and future freak folk leaders Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom and Vetiver.

“That mini-fest, dubbed Quiet Quiet Window Lights, was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” says Pollard. “I took a chance, grabbed a friend and hopped on a plane, hoping that if we showed up on the night of the show, they’d somehow let us in. Not only did they let us in, but we spent the weekend hanging out on the beaches of Marin County with the bands. It literally altered the course of my life.”

Pollard’s hoping to recapture the raw energy and spontaneity of that weekend through his own Quiet Quiet Annex Lights series, which celebrates American folk and roots music from April 5 to 22 at the Tranzac. American guitarist and former Cul de Sac frontman Glenn Jones (with opener Merival) kicks it off on April 5, pioneering 60s folk picker Peter Walker (with Ian Russell) follows on April 16, and Hurley (with Fiver) plays April 22.

At the Tranzac (292 Brunswick), April 5-22, 8 pm. $12-$15. Sold out at ticketscene.ca but available in person at Rotate This and Soundscapes.
