Go digital at these five Toronto tech events this week

Toronto’s technology sector is booming and its community of innovators is one of the largest in North America. Get a taste of what that’s all about at these five events taking place this week.

Clouds Over Sidra

The Sidra Project is a collaboration between Toronto’s Artscape and the United Nations designed to connect Canadians to the global refugee crisis. From October 25 to 27, Clouds Over Sidra, a short-film viewed in virtual reality, will be shown for free at Union Station. Created by UN creative director Gabo Arora, the eight-minute film is depicted through the eyes of a 12-year-old girl named Sidra, and places viewers inside a refugee camp in Jordan. The immersive experience is presented using Samsung Gear VR technology. See listing for details.

Give Cyber Peace A Chance

Join Paul Meyer, adjunct professor of International Studies and a Centre for Dialogue fellow in International Security at Simon Fraser University, for a discussion on cyber security. The Eric Fawcett Memorial Lecture takes place at the University of Toronto on October 27 at 8 pm. The event is free and open to all. See listing for details.

TEDxToronto

Canada’s largest TEDx event returns to Toronto on October 27 at Koerner Hall (273 Bloor West). This year’s conference focuses on the theme Symbols + Signals, with insights into technology, medicine, language, politics, the environment and design. TEDxToronto is sold out, but live streaming is available for free online. See listing for details.

Toronto Tech Summit

The city’s tech community gathers at St Lawrence Centre for the arts (27 Front East) on October 28 for Toronto Tech Summit. Hear speakers from AirBnB, Sony Playstation, Klick Health, Uber, MiaoMiao Games and more, and learn about the latest trends in tech. Tickets are $25 and pre-registration is required.
