The fact that Bob Geldof thought people would turn off their TVs if he put African artists on the Live 8 bill - that behemoth internationally televised all-star concert benefit for, um, Africa - turned out to be a blessing in disguise for motherland music enthusiasts. Peter Gabriel seized the moment and organized a special Live 8 concert featuring an extensive and varied roster of African musicians, in terms of geography and musical styles, from spiritual to rap, for what turned out to be the best of the all the Live 8s, at the Eden Project, a massive greenhouse/biodome complex in Cornwall, England. Everyone put their all into it. See Kidjo deliver fiery soul, Geoffrey Oryema and Peter Gabriel get meditative and Youssou N'Dour and Dido rock a 7 Seconds duet so impassioned, you'll be like, "Neneh who?" And perhaps most enriching amid this dense disc, you may discover a few new favourites.
