X at Yonge-Dundas Square. Thu June 17. xtheband.com Rating: NNNN

NXNE has a penchant for unleashing great, under-appreciated trailblazers on Toronto's most public stage. But where last year's performance by The Sonics showed that youthful abandon can't always be recaptured decades later, X proved that, yes, sometimes it can.

Blazing through a plethora of peak-period hits like "We're Desperate" and "White Girl," the seminal LA punks sounded positively ageless. John Doe and Exene Cervenka hit all the same harmonies, while grinning guitarist Billy Zoom ripped rockabilly leads and chugging punk riffs like it was 1977.
