in animal logic, a well-planned theme exhibition at Stephen Bulger Gallery, you can see images of a rhino in captivity, a black cat in a moment of intimacy and Spam-fed Appalachian trail dogs lazily keeping watch. Volker Seding’s portrait of a wilting, zoo-bound gorilla is an alarming depiction of the quiet extinction of the species. Daniel and Geo Fuchs’s portraits of specimens bottled in brine present another provocative spectacle of animal containment.
Their embryonic-looking white bear takes on the bleached glow of a faux-fur stuffed toy. While bordering on horrific, the image placates with its warm Technicolour hues.
In his beautiful black-and-white prints, Shelby Lee Adams elevates the mangy guard dogs of east Kentucky to noble, loyal friends within the hierarchy of domesticated animals. art@nowtoronto.com
