Sandy Plotnikoff at GoodWater (800 Dundas West) to February 23. 416-703-5222. Rating: NNN
adventurous, deeply contempla-tive and ultimately enormously pleasurable is the way to describe Sandy Plotnikoff's art. In his most recent show, one large-scale 4-by-5-foot photograph -- hung so that it appears upside down -- marks a departure from the grids he's known for. The photo, a snapshot blow-up, captures a figure clad in a beige full-body leotard vaulting over a bush.
The figure's spine is aligned with the outline of the bush, and the beige of his outfit matches the building in the background, while his green baseball hat matches the bush.
Going beyond his previous pursuits of conscious chromatic coordination, this image trades on serendipity and pushes the limits of his formalist concerns.
In capturing a scene of unchoreographed urban gymnastics, Plotnikoff mingles the obvious and the obscure. Yeah, matching colours is cool, but a matching bush and cap, how cool is that?
