Another smart group of photographers has sprung out of OCAD. At the 2003 Contact photography festival, a few students put on a strong show at SOF and strongest among them was Crystal Liu . Four pieces currently hanging in Leo Kamen’s back room give you a taste of what this demure but wilful girl is all about.
In each, a landscape is dwarfed by the sky above. The landscapes become as light as air, seeming about to float up into space. Liu has a delicate touch with the camera, and the result is more akin to painting than photography.
Keep an eye on her. She’s managed to wow a gallery owner who usually focuses on more mature artists.
As Leo Kamen says, “I don’t do young artists.”
But he does do Liu.
