doris sung on view from Wednesday (July 11) to July 21 at Propeller (984 Queen West), with a reception 2-5 pm July 14. 416-504-7142. Rating: NNNN
doris sung explores her own struggle to make reproductive choices with Round And Round The Beginning, a moving body of work inspired by parallels between Chinese folk fertility symbols -- specifically, toylike objects depicting compound species, like a Tiger/Owl -- and the imagery of modern genetic science.Sung started the series in 96, when she was still working with gouged plywood, a la Paterson Ewen, but the newest works in the series take their cues from traditional Chinese scroll painting , which Sung studied in her native Hong Kong. Still determined to push material boundaries, she works with the translucent qualities of xuan paper, painting in layers with traditional ink and pigments, which she then mounts, rigid, to a board background.
Sung also gets some great effects by cutting-and-pasting distressed inkjet printouts. Her radical mix of traditional forms with contemporary practice works -- lurid colours, cheeky puns and all. DH @@@@@
