Fab Floria

FLORIA SIGISMONDI at the

Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art

(5040 Yonge) to October 28.

416-395-7430. Rating: NNN

floria sigismondi’s fans will love it no matter what, and that — at least in part — is the point.Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art curator David Liss booked the phenomenally successful New York City-based music video director’s Come Part Mental into hometown turf (the Hamilton-bred Sigismondi is an OCAD grad) in hopes of raising the North York gallery’s profile, and the strategy is working.

Not that Sigismondi’s much-heralded return to fine arts packs many surprises. Most of the photos on view are stills from video productions, including those for famous clients David Bowie (who gave Floria her big break), Björk and Marilyn Manson (for whom she did the notorious Beautiful People video — yes, the dental torture guy is in this show).

But if Sigismondi’s Cronenberg-esque monster mannequins feel like they’ve been done before, her staged photo fantasies and personal (as opposed to client-driven) videos, which run on veiled monitors hanging in a cluster from the gallery ceiling and projected onto the smashed hood of a wrecked Subaru, are pure poetry.

Selected large-scale photos (prices top $15,000 a print!) are coming to SPIN Gallery (156-158 Bathurst), along with works by Catherine Heard, from October 31.
