Transformation AGO/Frank Gehry , design unveiled January 28. Rating: NNN Rating: NNN
and speaking of the ago, as every- one is, I was disappointed by Frank Gehry 's design at first. But after some reflection I think he's just the wrong person for the job. Unlike architects Daniel Libeskind of the ROM and William Alsop of OCAD, Gehry has already built his masterpiece - the Guggenheim Bilbao. On the downside of a great career, he's a geezer architect hired to build a space to house the collection of another geezer. Not exactly a vibrant youth movement at the AGO.
That said, Gehry's design is still better than 99.9 per cent of the buildings in this city. He warned us not to expect a Bilbao, and we didn't get one (nor do we deserve a beautiful form resembling a great ship in full sail, given how we've littered our harbourfront with condos like so many trash cans).
If Gehry is guilty of anything, it's showing unrealistic presentation views from high angles and distant perspectives that make no sense in a cluttered city (see the pictures at www. ago. net).
But when it's finished and you're standing on Dundas looking up at the sloping glass and titanium wall, you'll be impressed. Trust me.
