Grand illusion

Eric Raymond at Artcore (33 Hazelton), to March 1. 416-920-3820. Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

Eric Raymond’s sculptural pieces paint lush pictures of untouched landscapes by means of digital imagery, computers and a lot of help from the local power company.Emitting a glow in the darkened gallery space at Artcore, long, thin horizontal light boxes create the illusion of magnificent views of placid lakes, stoic rock and slivers of greenery — country views for city dwellers.

Another piece consists of two monitors running along a track, guided by long umbilical cords that spill out of a PC whose innards are exposed. The monitors move back and forth in a seemingly random sequence, revealing sections of a long landscape as they go. As a monitor moves from one end to the other, it slowly uncovers the entire image.

With technology like this, we can easily replace nature. It’s the next evolutionary step after sitting at home watching the Outdoor Life Network.
