watching betty goodwin evolveis like witnessing poetry in motion. Goodwin’s art may be synonymous with pain and passion, but in her latest work the Montreal legend seems to have found peace.
Great billowing cloudlike forms on ecstatic blue grounds are creeping into her trademark oil-stick-on-mylar drawings, while the rusted steel and neatly folded canvas of her sculptural works are rigidly under control.
In Goodwin’s hands, a damaged shovel becomes as fragile, and deeply ambiguous, as a white lily.
