Grope for Luna at 64 Steps Contemporary Art (1164 Queen West), to February 28. 416-535-7837. Rating: NNN Rating: NNN
grope for luna alternately trades in the sublime transcendence of conceptual art and the immediate gratification of a jelly doughnut. The show riffs off lyrics by the Pixies, a band that forged a brand of poetry peculiar to the pop world. Instead of pretentious, clichéd lines about the night sky, we get simple, subtle poetry that’s almost erotic. It’s a perfect platform for 11 artists who appreciate the chance to walk a fine line between masterpiece and making fun.
Grope For Luna offers beautiful pop phrases from some of Toronto’s finest, including Karma Clarke-Davis’s provocative sculpture, Carlo Cesta’s pristine sculpted forms and Jennifer McMackon’s candy-landscaped video. art@nowtoronto.com
