m Vincenzo Pietropaolo: Canadians At Work, at Pages (256 Queen West) until May 6. Rating: NNN Rating: NNN
The window display at pages Bookstore is more like it. Mind you, this art-and-culture text mecca has a rep for hosting better-than-average -- and occasionally brilliant -- exhibits in its Queen West windows.
Canadians At Work showcases the photo series the Canadian Autoworkers Union commissioned from Toronto-based photographer Vincenzo Pietropaolo as a millennium project through 1999. The powerful images Pietropaolo, and some of the CAW members he encountered while crossing Canada, created for this project embody the dignity of labour. The two museum-quality prints (Pietropaolo currently has a solo show at the Royal Ontario Museum) and grid of reproductions make a stunning if small street-level display.
Still, it isn't an art show -- it's a book promotion. Too bad the store only has two copies of this alt coffee-table text, both behind lock and key as part of the window display.
