MAGNUM PHOTOS: STATES OF CONFLICT at Contact Gallery (80 Spadina), to May 31. 416-539-9595. Rating: NNNN
The festival’s theme, Still Revolution, is aptly illustrated in masterful journalistic photos by members of the renowned Magnum agency. Susan Meiselas returns to Nicaragua with giant prints of images shot during the 1979 civil war and collaborates with locals to make them into memorials, Stuart Franklin‘s iconic photo shows a solitary man holding off a line of tanks in Tiananmen Square, and Larry Towell‘s shaky tear-gas-obscured images of riot cops convey the chaos of the WTO protests in Quebec City.

The gallery also screens Magnum In Motion, a series of short films in which these and other agency members offer gripping accounts of their experiences in the line of fire.
