Orange glow

keith hopkins at Natural Light Window (506 Adelaide West) to September 30. 416-504-1311. Rating: NNN

keith hopkins’s textural puns offer far more than their all-orange surfaces might suggest. His street-level window-front display of six monochromatic wood-textured paintings at the 24/7 club district Natural Light Window (just what its name implies) manages to be both singularly uniform and compelling.

Hopkins plays with built-up impasto effects in a way that’s far more sculptural than painterly.

The result — something like a heavily varnished translucent orange glaze over driftwood — approaches mesmerizing.
