Permit pursuit

CHRISTIAN GIROUX AND DANIEL YOUNG at Prefix (401 Richmond West), to June 27. 416-591-0357. Rating: NNNN

This local sculpting duo puts on one of Contact’s best shows, a 13-minute film loop of every Toronto edifice, excepting private homes, that received a building permit in 2006. The structures, begun before the current financial crisis and in various states of completion, include condos, malls, gas stations, libraries, Christian, Muslim and Hindu houses of worship and generic institutions.

It’s a wonderful deadpan portrait of our city, an affectionate document of our bland, modernist aesthetic. Check their website (cgdy.com) to see how this architectural inquiry jibes perfectly with their sculptures, which riff on furniture and industrial forms to send up 20th-century minimalism.
