Signs of the city’s times

Artcity Festivals Poster Exhibit at City Hall (100 Queen West), April 1-8, 10 am to 10 pm. 416-338-0338, www.artworldcity.com. Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN

Less a visual arts show than a celebration of Toronto’s burgeoning cultural diversity, the first annual Artcity Festivals Poster Exhibit features posters from Toronto’s top hundred annual cultural events and festivals.

However peripherally aware you might be of our many celebrations, seeing them together in one space is overwhelming. Toronto has more readings, art, dance, theatre, film and music than you can shake your opera glasses at.

On show here are posters for NXNE, Toronto Art Expo, Toronto International Film Festival, Caribana, Afrofest, Canadian Music Week, Beaches Jazz Festival, Harbourfront and Distillery events, Buskerfest, International Festival Of Authors, Toronto Festival Of Storytelling, Festival Of Classics, the Fringe theatre and fFIDA dance festivals, ImagiNative, World Of Comedy film fest and many others.

There are also posters for ongoing readings and music, theatre and dance performances too numerous to mention.

Did you know there’s an entire film festival devoted to portrayals of madness? Nine different jazz festivals? A country music singing contest? Six days of international comedy improv in the summer? I didn’t. Whatever your knowledge of our local cultural scene, however, you’re bound to find events that will surprise and entice you. The artworks here publicize happenings all over central Ontario, from Stratford to Ottawa, Niagara Falls to North Bay. This is a show about the many cultural communities of Ontario, with something for literally everyone. Bring your dance card to City Hall and prepare to have an interesting year.
