Toronto Gallery Openings: Astral Bodies, Scott Connaroe and more

Five Canadian women – Shuvinai Ashoona, Karen Azoulay, Shary Boyle, Spring Hurlbut and Pamela Norrish – inhabit imaginary spaces at the junction of reason and dreams in works that meditate on the nature of divinity. Curated by York Lethbridge.

Scott Conarroe: Glacier Du Tacul, France

Scott Conarroe: Frontière, Frontiera, Grenze, at Stephen Bulger Gallery, November 26 to January 14, reception 2-5 pmNovember 26.

Canadian photographer Conarroe, know for his explorations of transportation infrastructure, here examines changing national boundaries in the Alps  (the show’s title is the word “border” in French, Italian and German) resulting from receding glaciers and drifting watersheds. Also at the gallery until December 10 are Allan Tannenbaum’s photos of rockers and scenesters in 70s New York.

Asama Sultana: The Empty Dot

Asama Sultana: Letter To My Unborn Child, at Gallery 50, to December 4, reception 2-6 pm November 26.

The Pakistan-born, Toronto-based artist uses her own uprooted hair to sew and embellish baby clothes for her imaginary child, expressing her sense of loss and displacement and her struggle with identity in exile.

Helen Liene Dreifelds: Écoulement

Anouk Deloges and Helen Liene Dreifelds: Outside The Lines, at Lonsdale Gallery, to December 23, reception 2-5 pmNovember 26.

Emerging textile artists Deloges, from Quebec, and Dreifelds, from Toronto, make sculptural fibre works using embroidery, weaving and laser-cutting that dwell somewhere between flat and 3D.
