the annual new toronto works Show is like those plain brown loot bags: you never know what surprises or disappointments are inside. While it’s as diverse as ever, the 2003 show does feel grim, with its post-September 11 body of work. Scott Treleaven’s Beastboy — a violent and dark work — sets the tone. Irene Bindi’s beautiful Blackboard shows a classroom of students scribbled over in black, while school terms used by prison inmates are read in voice-over. Annie MacDonell’s belly dancer dazzles with her hypnotic, though slightly vomit-inducing, gyrations.

Slugs, slips, pink eye, partying, pixelation, grass and J.Lo all get screen time, so there’ll be something for everyone.
