Ben McNally Books announces new location

Ben McNally's original Bay Street location.

Ben McNally Books, one of Toronto’s most beloved bookstores, announced last fall that the lease on its Bay Street store would not be renewed to make way for a new development.

But it looks like downtown bibliophiles don’t have to despair quite yet: A new, temporary location has been found for the 13-year-old bookstore – though its management admits that it might not quite match the stately beauty of the original.

“As many of you know, we have to vacate our beautiful bookstore at 366 Bay St. at the end of this month,” McNally wrote in a letter to customers.

“While our search for a longterm location continues, we are delighted to have found a new (if temporary) home for the bookstore that will allow us to remain operational for the coming months.”

The new location is at 317 Adelaide East, and will be fully up and running in the next two weeks for curbside pickups and deliveries. It’s not yet known how long they will be in the new location.

“We love the new space. It is bright and welcoming, and perfect for what we can offer at this time,” McNally wrote.

In-store browsing has been on hold at Ben McNally since the start of the pandemic (as has been the case at several other Toronto bookstores, which began emphasizing local delivery).

The store hopes to begin offering in-store browsing by appointment in time for the holidays.

“This year has been a challenging year for everyone, but these past couple of months have reminded us what matters most: community, friendship, and the comfort of a good book,” McNally said.
