Alex Leslie wins Writers’ Trust Award for emerging LGBT writers

Alex Leslie proved the value of crossover when she copped the Dayne Ogilvie Prize for Emerging LGBT Writers. The Writers’ Trust jury recognized two of Leslie’s recent releases, her short story collection People Who Disappear ($21.95, Freehand, also nominated for the 2013 Lambda Award for debut fiction) and a collection of prose poems, The Things I Heard About You ($18.95, blewointment).

The prize, awarded and named in honour of passionate arts lover Ogilvie, who was the managing editor of Xtra magazine for several years, comes with a $4,000 cheque.

Also acknowledged were Winnipeg-based trans writer Casey Plett and Toronto’s multi-talented Vivek Shraya, who received honours of distinction from the jury, and $250 each.

The winners will be celebrated at a special event on Friday (June 26) at the Gardiner Museum, where the writers read as part of the museum’s Doors At 6 pm series, which puts the spotlight on emerging artists in various disciplines.
