How do you follow up a blockbuster like The Book Of Negroes? Lawrence Hill had his work cut out for him, no doubt, but his new novel, The Illegal ($34.99, HarperCollins), has a promising premise. Keita, a young boy who lives on a fictional mountainous African island, has found his calling as a long-distance runner. But when he’s targeted because his father is an outspoken dissident, he escapes to a nearby wealthy island where he survives by running for money in a new kind of underground. Hill talks about the book on Tuesday (September 8) at the Reference Library. The event is sold out, but rush seats will be available. See Readings.
