Many photographers (most notably Cindy Sherman) have adopted the strategy of the digitally repeated and inserted self, but in Unreleased, 2Fik throws in so many humorous curve balls that you can’t help but scratch your head admiringly and chuckle. Inhabiting a stable of characters, he sets up surreal single-shot soap operas that gleefully short-circuit all manner of cultural hard wiring. Each figure has a name and a biography: 2Fik has multiplied himself into an entire cast that can play with a variety of sexual and cultural tensions. The campiness and sheer hilarity are so brash, they nearly eclipse the underlying artifice.
