Luminato: Visual Arts

The Occupy movement made the tent concept news, but Toronto site-specific participatory installation artists Thomas + Guinevere (Thom Sokoloski and Jenny-Anne McCowan) have been erecting Encampments since 06. At their Fort York version of The Encampment, luminous tents hold smaller installations by volunteer artistic collaborators that explore the impact of the War of 1812 on everyday life.

It’s part of Luminato’s visual art programming, which makes a point of bringing the work outside the four- walled confines of a typical gallery.

Toronto interventionist Dan Bergeron, who’s been commissioned by Luminato to work with youth in Regent Park, repurposes condo sandwich boards for Re-Ply, a series of temporary sculptures along Parliament Street that comment on urban development. Check the Luminato website to locate Austria’s Rainer Prohaska’s Toronto Carretilla Initiative, a sculptural mobile kitchen transported in shopping carts where participants cook and share a meal in unexpected ways.

Local anti-authoritarian duo Blue Republic (Anna Passakas and Radoslaw Kudlinski) and Belgium’s LAb[au] (Laboratory for Architecture and Urbanism) assemble transition-promoting installations from found objects at Pearson Airport’s Terminal One and Brookfield Place.

At the Distillery’s Airship 37, Montreal’s Corno throws a one-day loft-party-style live painting event. And in response to Stewart Goodyear’s 10-hour Beethoven sonata marathon, Germany’s Jorinde Voigt shows drawings at the ROM, and Indonesia’s Melati Suryodarmo performs onstage at Koerner Hall while Goodyear’s at the piano.
