Who: Daniel Barrow
Where: Drake Hotel, 1150 Queen West
Why: Winnipeg-born artist and 2010 Sobey Art Award winner Barrow treats us to one of his projection performances, which usually involve lurid tales, histrionic emotions, pastel children’s-book-style illustrations and low-tech media that give them the feel of 19th-century magic lantern shows. On the hour between 8 pm and 1 am, performers in hotel room windows manipulate his drawings on overhead projectors while Barrow narrates. Viewed from outside, the multiple projections come together into an animated play described as part vaudeville picture show and part Hitchcock film.
