It's a beautiful thing to watch a queer talent who once had only a niche audience blow up big. Alison Bechdel got lots of lesbian love for her Dykes To Watch Out For comic strip in the 90s. Then her graphic memoir Fun Home made a big splash in 2006. She follows it up with another graphic memoir, Are You My Mother? ($25.95, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), about her problematic relationship with Mom. If a recent rave in the New York Times is any indicator, Bechdel could be headed for superstardom. She reads at Buddies on Saturday (May 5), part of the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. See listing.
