JAKUB DOLEJS, ANDREE GAGNE, TIM RODA at Angell Gallery (12 Ossington), to May 29. 416-530-0444. Rating: NNNN
Jakub Dolejs has already won international acclaim for his subtly conceptual photographs that pose models and objects in front of his own painted backdrops in tableaux that are either cinematic or bracingly minimal. His most recent work, however, goes beyond all the heady postmodernity to a subtler and more intimate visual discourse on the endless mystery of objects and their images.

Andrée Gagné’s homeless people sleeping on park benches, entirely covered by their blankets, disturbingly resemble bodies at a crime scene even as the soft black-and-white focus romanticizes them.
In Tim Roda’s complex and whimsical set-ups, he and his son activate improbable contraptions or adopt elaborate narrative poses in surreal settings. Yet his images seem strangely plausible and familiar, like amusing dreams you might have had.
