Movie mayhem

Unsure what to check out at Luminato? No problem. Do your research with the Luminato Reel series of movies at the NFB. This lineup of free flicks provides background for many of this year’s shows and artists. Highlights include documentaries about the creation of Red Sky’s dance piece Tono (June 7, 11 am) and Kurt Perschke’s RedBall Project (June 7, 1 pm) and the self-explanatory The Genius Of Lenny Breau (June 8, 7 pm), the guitar virtuoso who inspired the play 5 O’Clock Bells.

Two of the fest’s high-profile talents, Jiri Kylián and Robert Lepage, also get some love. Nederlands Dans Theater Celebrates Jiri Kylián screens June 7 at 7 pm (see review, page 84), while the choreographer’s Car Men screens June 14 at 11 am.

And Lepage: Breaking A Leg (June 12, 7 pm) explores the Montreal theatre genius’s creative process in a look at his collaboration with Theatre 1774. It’s only 48 minutes, a drop in the bucket compared to Lepage’s nine-hour Luminato opus, Lipsynch.
