Sapphire had a runaway hit with Push, the devastating story of Precious, an obese teenager raped and impregnated by her father, and then scored big when the book was made into an Oscar-winning, Oprah-approved film. Now Sapphire follows up with The Kid (Penguin, $30 cloth), the story of Abdul Jones, Precious’s baby son. Sapphire has a take-no-prisoners approach to trauma – she’s not interested in easing the blow. Like Push, The Kid has its inspirational moments, but it’s no less harrowing.
