The power of words

The Proud Voices stages are like the queer community – diverse, powerful and ready to take anything on. Programmed and hosted by NOW books editor Susan G. Cole, this year’s Voices, features everything from soulful singer/author Vivek Shraya (Sunday 6:30 pm) to spoken word sensation Truth Is… (Saturday 3 pm), and from brilliant veteran thinker Emma Donoghue (Sunday, 3:30 pm) talking about lesbianism in literature to the Pride debut of the Aqsa Zine collective (Saturday, 2 pm), a group of radical queer women speaking their minds. Keep an eye out for S. Bear Bergman (Saturday, 7:30 pm), the provocative gender jammer who, with a mix of charm and outrage, blew audiences away audiences last year with his stories of life as a trans man. He’s a father now, so he’s got a rich new field to plow.
