Kempinas’s sculpture extends minimalism to a new level of subdued cool. Working with videotape as a raw material, he stretches, orders and patterns long threads of VHS stock into mesmerizing geometric op art tunnels and shimmering curtains.

His sculpture for Nuit Blanche is even more pointedly ephemeral. For Big O, he keeps a single loop of tape dancing in mid-air by placing over strategically placed industrial fans, creating a single black line that continuously draws itself into new configurations through space.
