Four must-attend events at Scugog Arts’ small town BIG festival

Scugog Arts

From April 30 to May 8, folks with a passion for all things creative are invited to immerse themselves in Scugog’s vibrant arts scene. The multidisciplinary arts festival, aptly named small town BIG, is set to take over 22 galleries, theatres, studios and other venues across the township.

This year’s festival will feature 23 events that showcase more than 75 artists, who are collaborating with 14 different arts and culture presenters.

“People love to visit our rural town of Port Perry in Scugog, about an hour north-east of Toronto, for its arts and culture scene,” shares Marion Meyers, president of Scugog Arts. “This year, we’ve expanded from our annual Lake Scugog Studio Tour to nine days of special events, including concerts, live theatre and Indigenous programming. We are encouraging everyone to come enjoy this big event in our small town.”

If you’re going to be visiting Port Perry at the end of April or beginning of May, be sure to check out these four events at small town BIG.

In-Conversation with Drew Hayden Taylor

(Pictured above) On May 4 at 7 pm at the Town Hall Theatre, festival goers are invited to attend an evening with award-winning Canadian playwright Drew Hayden Taylor. As a well-recognized Indigenous filmmaker, short story writer, novelist and playwright – among several other titles – he has plenty of entertaining stories to share with audiences.

At the intimate event, he will dive into his life and most popular works, including the documentary on Native humour that he wrote and directed for the National Film Board of Canada.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased here.

The McKenna Henderson Blues Band Concert

There’s no better way to enjoy the sunny spring weather than by attending an outdoor show at Two Blokes Cider. The farm-based cidery, located just north of Port Perry, boasts picnic tables and a large grassy area where guests can groove to the tunes played by the blues band.

The afternoon performance takes place on May 7 from 1 to 3 pm. Tickets for this event are $20.

Metal Jewellery-Making Demo with Cheryl Fulcher

If you’re interested in picking up a new hobby, this complimentary workshop will provide you with some much-needed inspiration. On May 6 from 1 to 4 pm at the Scugog Arts Space, Cheryl Fulcher will lead interactive demonstrations on how to make a forged cuff bracelet and chain-link jewellery. She will be going over tool options, processes, helpful resources, the types of metal that can be used and more.

Edge of Dylan

Calling all Bob Dylan fans – this performance by Randy Shook perfectly captures the American singer-songwriter’s quirky onstage behaviour, unique vocals and creative music compositions. Shook has been emulating the musician’s vocals and persona for more than a decade, often moving diehard Dylan enthusiasts to tears.

This event will take place on April 30 at the Town Hall Theatre from 8 to 10 pm. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased here.
