A largely-untold story behind Toronto’s evolution into one of the most successful multicultural cities in the world. After emigrating to escape religious persecution in Europe, a group of resilient Jewish immigrants found they were discriminated against by the established business community in Toronto. Consequently, circumstances forced them into entrepreneurship. Aware of the coming influx of immigrants in the post-war years, these new Torontonians anticipated the need for affordable, quality rental housing. Director Ron Chapman uses a compelling mix of stunning recreations, archival footage and photographs, and interviews with these groundbreakers and their families to tell this inspiring piece of the city’s history.
Chosen as the closing night film at the Cannes Festival, The Specials (Hors Normes) is a heartfelt drama inspired by a true story. Vincent Cassel (Black Swan, Eastern Promises) plays Bruno, a Jewish man who runs a shelter for autistic teens turned away from other institutions. His friend Malik (Reda Kateb, A Prophet) is a Muslim who runs a non-profit that trains disadvantaged teenagers to be caregivers. Frustrated by lack of funding, the two men join forces to confront systemic neglect and fight for those marginalized by society. Directed by the popular duo behind the French smash hit, The Intouchables.
Nominated for 9 César awards.
