Gay Gags

oot & aboot a night of gay stand-up comedy with susan stewart, Ted Morris and Richard Ryder, Sunday (April 7), 8:45 pm, at Tom Foolery’s (197 Bloor West). 416-967-5005. Rating: NNNNN

Where are the queer comics? A few years ago they were everywhere. Funny folks like Elvira Kurt, Gavin Crawford, Jonathan Wilson and Ed Sahely regularly burned up local stages from Church to Main. Now you’re more likely to see them on the tube, which is fine — they’ve got bills to pay — but where are their successors?

Don’t look to most mainstream clubs, where there are more fag jokes per second than in a high school locker room. Even so-called alternative comics have used the expression “That is so gay!” as a generic put-down. That is so stupid.

With the exception of the annual We’re Funny That Way fest, no one has the will or grace to mount a successful queer comedy night.

So this Sunday’s Oot & Aboot should be an event. Featuring a trio of fresh-faced, hilarious and out performers — Susan Stewart, Ted Morris and Richard Ryder — the night could become a regular event.

Until we lose all three stand-ups to TV.
