Thompson’s rant was explained the next week during Laugh Sabbath’s Comedy And The Last Christmas Ever show. It was all part of a brilliant video parody of Michael Richards’s N-word rant. Thompson’s post-screening apologies – complete with intentionally fumbled language – were dead on.
Too bad his other sketches with Levi MacDougall and musician Bob Wiseman didn’t reach the same heights.
Admittedly, openers Knock Knock. Who’s There? Comedy! were pretty hard to top. This quartet, dressed in ugly Xmas sweaters and vests, read aloud a series of “Christmas letters” they’d supposedly received, and then used slide projections, videos and webcam computers to respond.
Thanks, KK.WT?C! The image of sitting on Santa’s (or Mrs. Claus’s) lap is forever ruined, as is the Nativity story and holiday recipes.
Not since the SCTV troupe has a group of comics mined so much laughter from the conventions of comedy itself. I’d watch this group anywhere, any time.
This week’s Laugh Sabbath show (December 17) looks promising, too. It’s the second anniversary of Brian Barlow’s Loner Show, featuring dozens of comics doing one minute’s worth of material that’s not stand-up.
