Unlike plays, good dance works are rarely remounted or held over.
Which makes the return of Nest, Christopher House’s Dora-nominated work for his Toronto Dance Theatre Company, a welcome event.
“A piece is never finished until you’ve seen it a few times in front of an audience,” says House, hot on the heels of his company’s successful Four At The Winch series.”Only then do you know what for sure is absolutely right about it,” he says.
Nest, a multimedia piece, looks at the creative process through science, art, literature and lots of ironic humour. It marked a departure for House.
His first full-length show, it also showcased text alongside his characteristic suggestive movement. He continued using text in last fall’s Severe Clear.
Does this mark a new direction for the company?”I think so,” says House. “I restricted myself before to working in pure movement. At the time, I thought that was the most exciting and challenging thing. I needed a broader range of tools with Nest and Severe Clear. After 20 years in dance, I think it’s OK to expand the horizons.”
