Dora! Dora! Dora!

The Dora Mavor Moore Awards are handed out at a gala event hosted by Q’s Jian Ghomeshi (get ready to hear a ton of Billy Bob Thornton jokes, folks) on June 29.

But the nominees for Toronto’s biggest theatre/dance/opera awards came out Wednesday, with Waawaate Fobister’s Agokwe leading the general theatre category with eight nominations and Anton Piatigorsky’s recent Eternal Hydra dominating the indie theatre category with 10 noms.

Some notable nominations:

Actor Raven Dauda is competing against herself in the General Theatre award for Featured Female performance in a Play or Musical. She got recognized for Canadian Stage’s productions of Doubt and Miss Julie: Freedom Summer.

All four leads from the musical Jersey Boys are up against each other in the category of Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principle Role – Musical: Jeremy Kushnier, Michael Lomensa, Jeff Madden and Quinn VanAntwerp. Could they cancel each other out and let the other nominee, Richard Lee (from The Forbidden Phoenix) win?

Degrassi actor Paula Brancati made a pretty smooth transition to theatre, winning Dora nods for her two stage performances: Cinderella: The Sillylicious Family Musical (nom for Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Principal Role – Musical) and Dog Sees God: Confessions Of A Teenage Blockhead (Outstanding Performance in a Featured Role in a Play or Musical).
