Fringe holdovers

Didn’t catch some of the hits at this year’s Toronto Fringe, which closed Sunday (July 14)?

The fourth annual Best Of The Fringe Festival, held at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, brings together eight audience and critical favourites from the fest, running two a day in rep through July 31.

In alphabetical order, the shows are Adopt This!, Death Married My Daughter, It’s Always You: The Musical, Polly Polly, Stealing Sam, Stop Kiss, Tales of Whoa! and The Truth About Comets.

They cover the same range as the festival itself, with drama, comedy, musicals and clown all part of the mix.

Unlike the Fringe, which sells half the tickets for every performance at the door, all tickets here are available for purchase in advance.

Fringing around Ontario

You might not know that the Toronto Fringe is part of a national association of similar organizations that run pretty much sequentially across Canada from May through September. And despite its title, The Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals, there are a few American members, too.

Next year a new group joins, with the Durham region inaugurating its own Fringe in May.

If you’ve not had enough Fringing and can get to Hamilton, that city’s Fringe fest starts tonight (July 18) and runs to July 28. The new head of the festival is theatre artist Claire Calnan, who we hope won’t desert Toronto stages because of her new position.

You’ll recognize a few familiar shows at this year’s festival, including Death Married My Daughter, ROCKgarden Party! and Oh God – The Drums, all of which have played the Toronto Fringe.

Another local show running in Hamilton is Philip-Dimitri Galas’s Baby Redboots’ Revenge, revived by performer Sean Sullivan and director Lynne Griffin. It recently picked up an award at the San Diego Fringe and has long been due for a remount here in Toronto.
