BEST LATE-NIGHT SET:
Aaron Berg at Yuk Yuk’s (March 13 late show)
Berg killed with angry material about Kosovo, Rwanda, Crocs and his sad gig as a male stripper. You gotta love a comic who drops the name Elia Kazan.
WORST LATE-NIGHT SET:
The Nasty Show, Just For Laughs (July 17, 11 pm)
Nick DiPaolo and Patrice O’Neal, we’re all for hardcore humour, but when it’s all homophobic and misogynist, you kind of take the punch out of punchlines. Only Canada’s Jason Rouse knew what he was doing.
FUNNIEST TV TALK SHOW MOMENT:
David Letterman does damage control on a potentially career-ruining scandal with five minutes of comedy gold.
BEST SHOW BY A B-LIST ACTOR:
John Leguizamo, Just For Laughs (July 15)
In this workshopped solo show, Legs came alive in a way he just doesn’t in his limited film roles. Smart, gut-bustingly funny and moving as hell.
WORST SHOW BY A B-LIST ACTOR:
Sarah Silverman, Just For Laughs (July 17)
Silverman barely even phoned in her hosting duties for show one of two at Massey Hall. Next time, Sarah, you might want to practise that guitar before playing it in front of 1,000 people.
WORST NO-SHOW BY A C-LIST ACTOR:
Tim Meadows at Comedy Bar
Shoshana Sperling ended a bit about motherhood at Plan B: The After Baby Show (January 16) by squirting her breast milk.
FUNNIEST VIRAL VIDEO:
Total Eclipse Of The Heart: Literal Video Version (youtube.com/watch?v=lj-x9ygQEGA)
Postmodern commentary on cheesy 80s excess and Pop-Up Video irony taken to the next level.
BEST POP CULTURE MINDFUCK:
Jackie Burroughs, grande dame of theatre, movies and TV, read erotica for a largely queer crowd at Andrew Johnston’s Pride edition of Bitch Salad (June 19).
The Hangover. Grown-up fratboy humour that made everyone piss their pants. Especially during those closing credits.
