M.J. Kang shows that family matters

M.J. Kang hasn’t been on a Toronto stage for years, but she made a strong impression as both actor and playwright in such works as dreams of blond & blue and the Dora-nominated Noran Bang: The Yellow Room.

She returns as writer and performer in Stay With Me, a comedy about a mother’s desire to stay physically close to her child. Forever. Trouble is, the daughter wants to go off to school to allow her mother to have her own life.

While separation is a serious topic, don’t look for too much heaviness here: the show is one of the family-friendly works at FringeKids! and aimed at audiences aged four to 12 (and their parents, of course). It also features Kang’s daughter, Mia Safdie, and is directed by her husband, Oren Safdie.

From July 4 at Palmerston Library Theatre.
