Culture Stage

The new year begins in style with Next Stage Fests edgy offerings

NEXT STAGE a festival of new works and remounts running in rep. Presented by the Toronto Fringe at Factory Theatre (125 Bathurst). Runs to January 17. $10-$15, passes $48-$90. 416-966-1062, fringetoronto.com or see listings.

The performance fireworks start this week with the return of Next Stage, the curated theatre, dance and comedy blowout that gives Fringe artists a chance to remount past hits or develop new works.

While past festivals have offered lots of solo and small-cast shows, this years event, again at Factory Theatre, includes a quartet of productions with 10 or more performers.

Festival-goers will have the opportunity to chat informally with artists and other audience members in the heated beer tent or meet with company members and talk about their shows at the returning talkback sessions at the Hoxton (69 Bathurst).

Also at the Hoxton, Michael Wheeler, executive director of the Small Theatre Administrative Facility (STAF), hosts a trio of general discussions: on the future of the storefront movement, the myth of a professional career in theatre and a third topic based on suggestions from Twitter (#urgentexchange) and an idea board set up in the beer tent.
