Pull the Trigger

Adding to the queer activism that’s part of Pride festivities, the multimedia Trigger Festival “reclaims the notion of the queer survivor through art as activism and activism as art.”

The third annual Trigger fest aims to be both entertaining and provocative, with workshops, a film event and an evening of live performance, the last on Friday (June 17).

Among the participants are Alec Butler, Ill Nana, Mikiki, Johnny Forever, Dainty Box, NoName and the Hobo Homos.

Expect a radical evening, one that defines itself as “militantly unapologetic.”

Cabaret for Red Root

As if it’s not busy enough mounting Tom Walmsley’s Something Red (see story here), the Red Root Collective presents a trio of post-show cabarets during the run.

First up, tonight (Thursday, June 16), you can catch jazz and blues band Textura, singer/songwriter Joe MacLeod and DJs Catalist and Goldfinger.

Later events include the audience-involved burlesque show Imprompteuse, in which viewers choose the artists’ costumes and songs they’ll perform for the improvised show (June 24) and a closing night music event (July 2).

Dine with SummerWorks

SummerWorks performances don’t kick off until August, but the annual juried theatre and music fest holds its launch party Saturday (June 18). The evening is pwyc ($10 suggested).

An added lure this time is an Artistic Director Auction, a chance to bid on homemade meals cooked by various artistic directors in each director’s home.

Among those taking part in the auction are the Tarragon’s Richard Rose, Nightwood’s Kelly Thornton, Buddies in Bad Times’ Brendan Healy, Studio 180’s Joel Greenberg, Volcano’s Ross Manson, the Theatre Centre’s Franco Boni, Lorraine Kimsa Theatre’s Allen MacInnis and SummerWorks’ Michael Rubenfeld.

Look for performances by Hannah Moscovitch, Susanna Hood, Laura Barrett, TOPS and others.

If you want to do more dining and help SummerWorks, the festival holds its first VIP dinner earlier in the evening.

For $75, you get a three-course meal, drinks and entertainment. The ticket cost includes admission to the launch and a tax receipt.
