International Man of Misery Jeremy Hotz

JEREMY HOTZ Stand-up comic, Massey Hall, February 11

If you’re complaining about climate change, the Canadian dollar or how The Force Awakens is too much like the original movies, you ain’t got nothin’ on Jeremy Hotz. The Ottawa-born comic has made a career out of being unhappy – at least in his schlubby stand-up persona. Throughout February he travels with his International Man Of Misery Tour, which brings him to Massey Hall and is guaranteed to make you, if not him, smile. 416-872-4255. masseyhall.com. It’s a new year. Any resolutions?

Not yet, because my last year’s resolution was to follow the Chinese calendar. So I have until February.

You’re embarking on the International Man Of Misery Tour. Any titles you came up with and rejected?

Maybe we should have gone with my original title: Star Wars.

You live in California. Why travel to Canada in the dead of winter?

Because I’m actually the international man of stupidity.

What’s the most miserable Canadian city?

New Westminster. Wait, scrap that. Old Westminster was probably worse.

We’ve got a shiny new prime minister, so will things be less miserable for us now?

I dunno. Being a politician in Canada is so miserable, one guy ended up doing crack.

Pharrell Williams’s song Happy: thoughts?

Clap along if you feel like that song stinks.

You’re in your 50s now. Things get better with age, right?

Right. I’ve heard that a man becomes invisible to women in his 50s. So I’m moving into a house with three college girls. They won’t even know I’m there.

Last comic who made you laugh?

Donald Trump. I mean, he can’t be serious…. Right?

Speaking of which, any U.S. presidential election predictions?

Sanders. Not Bernie. I’m voting for Colonel Sanders because of his outstanding military background.

Do you suffer from back or shoulder problems from your onstage posture?

Not since I started wearing the sports bra.

Surely Bill Cosby is more miserable than you.

Depends on what meds he slips into his own drinks.
