Fringe Review: Finding Funny

FINDING FUNNY by Daniel Stolfi. St. Vladimir Theatre. July 3 at 5:15 pm, July 5 at 10:15 pm, July 6 at 6:15 pm, July 7 at 1:45 pm, July 9 at 3:30 pm, July 10 at 4:30 pm. Buy tickets. Rating: NNN

In his new autobiographical solo show, Daniel Stolfi scores big laughs doing impressions of different types of terrible stand-up comedians he encountered early in his career.

Ostensibly recreating the lineup at his first gig, we see a hopelessly awkward MC, an angry Italian telling convoluted knock-knock jokes, an overly confident French magician and some weird musical mime.

Stolfi is a strong talent, and these bits are each very funny, but the overarching narrative about his discovery of comedy at age six, and his anxiety before his first real gig could be beefed up to include more jokes of their own.

At 45 minutes, the show ends too soon and feels more like a work in progress.
