Fringe Review: #Mannequingirl: The Musical

#MANNEQUINGIRL: THE MUSICAL by Eliza Blue Musselwhite in collaboration with Alyssa Minichillo. Annex Theatre. July 2 at 9:15 pm, July 4 at 10:45 pm, July 6 at 5:15 pm, July 7 at noon, July 8 at 8 pm, July 9 at 11 pm. Buy tickets. Rating: NNN

In this quirky musical skewering of society’s obsession with chasing online fame, Alyssa Minichillo plays a young woman who loses her job after getting injured by a falling mannequin then capitalizes on the event using every online platform imaginable to turn herself into a media sensation.

Minichillo has boundless energy and excellent comedic timing, especially delivering writer/composer Eliza Blue Musselwhite’s witty, non-sequitur lyrics. Michael Rubinstein’s staging allows for seamless transitions between video segments and live scenes. Although the energy drops during a pensive song near the end and the score still feels incomplete, Minichillo’s total commitment to the zaniness ensures many LOL moments. #checkitout
