Crow’s Theatre hits the musical button hard this season. In March in association with Theatre Passe Muraille, Jim Millan directs Time After Time: The Chet Baker Project, James O’Reilly’s new piece about American trumpet idol Baker, featuring Danny Depoe in the title role and with John Alcorn as musical director. Next up for Millan is the off-Broadway hit Hedwig And The Angry Inch, featuring Ted Dykstra (Two Pianos, Four Hands) as a transsexual East German immigrant rocker. The musical numbers * Pursuit of Happiness’s Moe Berg leads the band * suggest early Bowie, T Rex and Lou Reed. True to its material, the show runs at Lee’s Palace in April.
Millan starts the year directing a reading of the English translation of Tatsuo Kaneshita’s Ice Blossoms, about the trial of a Korean man who assassinated the Japanese prime minister in 1909 to protest Japan’s annexation of Korea. Kischuck, who founded Whiplash Theatre in the 80s, went off to Japan to study Noh theatre. Van Gogh blends his physical bent with Noh values, bringing together a monk and the tormented ghost of painter Vincent van Gogh.
