Edward Bond’s 1965 play Saved caused havoc with reviewers, the public and the British censors because of a scene in which a baby is brutally murdered. It soon became an international hit.
An examination of how an unfeeling economic system desensitizes working-class youth to violence and sex, the play follows characters who coalesce into a barbarous gang.
Director Jack Grinhaus, who asked some gritty questions about our culture and social classes in last year’s Fringe show The Complex: A Toronto Tale, gives the script a contemporary twist, looking at violence in today’s media and the widespread emotional apathy it creates.
