Circling wagons

There’s a grassroots feel to productions at the Caravan Farm Theatre, the 25-year-old company that performs outdoors in Armstrong, BC. Lots of T.O. artists have worked with the group, which is committed to the creation of new Canadian musicals and other shows. Many of those artists are banding together on Sunday (October 5) for the Caravan Farm Theatre Evacuation Jamboree , a funder to help Caravan make up revenues lost when last summer’s forest fires forced a week-long performing break. Among the entertainers are Christine Brubaker , Dmitry Chepovetsky , Allen Cole , Sean Dixon , Randi Helmers , Kelly McIntosh , John Millard , Karin Randoja and host Martin Julien . Not so Sweet

What’s in a name? For Toronto Dance Theatre , a lot. Their new show, a work by choreographer Christopher House , was skedded for November 18 with the title Sweet Science . Turns out Mariah Carey ‘s as yet unreleased cinematic opus has the same title. TDT’s going back to the drawing board. Hmmm…. Glitter?

Welcome Weesageechak

Want a big infusion of native theatre and dance? Check out the 16th edition of Weesageechak Begins To Dance , Native Earth Performing Arts’ development series of new native works. The longest-running such festival in the country, this edition features seven shows in four days, with new voices (including Lisa C. Ravensbergen , Michelle Olson and Ryan McMahon ) alongside established ones ( Dawn Dumont and Jani Lauzon ). Our bet for the most intriguing piece is Red Mother , written by Muriel Miguel , founding member of New York’s Spiderwoman Theatre and a regular visitor to Native Earth. Her one-woman show riffs on Brecht’s classic play Mother Courage. Here, instead of a European woman caught up in the Thirty Years War, we follow a native woman acting as witness to the various devastations of North America. See listings for details.
