Free Fall Wrap

If you’d gone up and down Queen West during the past two weeks, you’d have seen performances that ranged far beyond your average theatre. The 11-day Free Fall fest, sponsored by the Theatre Centre, featured some really sharp work from around the country. It closed last Sunday. The OOmph Group’ s Time Share , which began in the alley behind the Centre and continued at the Katharine Mulherin Gallery , was the company’s most audience-friendly piece to date, even though it involved viewers in the show’s action. A combination of wake, birthday party, gallery opening and karaoke sing-along, it explored autobiographical and fictional stories by performers Chad Dembski , Sean MacMahon , Ryan McVittie , Natasha Priest and Ryan Rogerson .

We also liked the smart Spoken Word/Body by dancer/performer Martin Bélanger and sound collaborator Jean-Sebastien Durocher Louis Hudon ‘s and Marcelle Hudon ‘s surrealistic puppet and shadow-play piece Par bonheur/Il y a and Radix Theatre ‘s Half A Tank , a parking-lot show in which cars had as much personality as live performers. Too bad it poured – our windshield kept fogging up .
